The Walled Towns and Picturesque Villages discovery trail

There are so many remarkable sites in Midi-Pyrénées... All of these villages are different, but they share a common soul.

The walled towns, some of them founded as long as 900 years ago, were the "new towns" of the Middle Ages. Sometimes built on the ruins of old villages, sometimes constructed in the middle of nowhere upon the whim of a local lord, they mark a sort of architectural golden age through their chessboard layout, with streets crossing at right angles and a central square: the market square. That said, the layout could be infinitely varied, but each town is unique.
