Rocamadour

The Dordogne Valley, Great Site of Midi-Pyrénées

At the northern tip of the Lot department, the Dordogne steers a pleasant course in luxurious countryside, where water, stone and history are inextricably mixed. The road follows the river where in years gone by the barges carried wine, leather goods and chestnuts towards Bordeaux.

An active witness of the Hundred Years War, the Dordogne invites you to linger in the delicate interlacing of small fortified hamlets along its banks (Carennac, Floirac, Creysse, etc.), to enjoy the large amphitheatres (Montvalent) and the shade of its cliffs revealing here and there a village (Gluges).
If the Dordogne allows us to get away from its seductive glamour, it is to enable us to visit the surrounding area with the walled town of Bretenoux, Souillac with its Byzantine style abbey church, the medieval Martel, the illuminated caves of Lacave, and of course the famous Gouffre de Padirac and the vertiginous town of Rocamadour.
