Sauveterre-de-Rouergue, a charming bastide full of energy

A royal 13th century bastide, Sauveterre-de-Rouergue is listed among the most beautiful villages in France. Located just 30 Km southwest of Rodez, it attracts visitors seeking beauty and authenticity.

The square with its wide arcades, the little narrow crisscrossing streets, the ramparts, the carved doorways and timbered houses: each detail of your walk in Sauveterre-de-Rouergue will tell you the story of this village that remains lively in spite of its great age (700 years).

Sauveterre belongs to the «Pays d'Art et d'Histoire des Bastides du Rouergue». Founded in 1281 by Guillaume de Vienne et de Mâcon, representing the king of France, it is one of the best-preserved bastides in the South West.

For centuries, its merchants and craftsmen built its reputation, before it fell into oblivion for many decades. During the last 20 years, and for our great pleasure, craftsmen have allowed this medieval town to regain its lost soul by choosing its old walls as a background for their creations: upmarket cutlery, saddles and leather goods, hat making, reproduction of ancient tapestries, internationally renowned, etc.

Faithful to its vocation for exchanges and sharing, as much today as in the time of kings, Sauveterre attracts visitors with events such as the Fête de la Lumière or Festival of Light (early August) and the crunchy Fête de la Châtaigne, or Chestnut Festival (late October). Take advantage of these to discover the land of Sauveterre, the Ségala: a little-known area whose peaceful landscapes lend themselves so well to walks and hikes.
