Sarrant, medieval by nature
Listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France, Sarrant remains deeply anchored in its medieval culture. To discover this little jewel, go to the Gers department, 39 Km northeast of Auch.

Seen from the sky, Sarrant looks like a snail's shell firmly rolled around its 15th century church. A 14th century fortified gate controls the access to the narrow streets where, in August, the Médiévales de Sarrant take place.
These very colourful festivities are attended by most of the inhabitants, attract hundreds of visitors and explore a different theme every year to a background of lively taverns, and medieval gastronomy and art and crafts.
A relay stage in Roman times for traders and legions travelling between Toulouse and Lectoure, castrum royal from the 13th century, a bastion largely damaged in the wars of religion, Sarrant carries a bulky historical baggage. The village is nevertheless also very fond of the present day with many active associations, a worthwhile offer of tours and hikes in the beautiful Gers countryside, and a taste for originality which adds to the pleasure of wandering through its narrow streets.
Be sure to go into the calligrapher's workshop in Sarrant and linger in the Art Village boutique (for supplies of foie gras, cassoulets and garbures gasconnes, chunky vegetable soups). There is also the librairie-tartinerie, or book and sandwich shop, an astonishing place where you can spend hours choosing books from a very up-to-date selection whilst sipping a cup of tea or enjoying a homemade sandwich, sweet or savoury.
